West Dean College and Gardens


West Dean College is run by the Edward James Foundation, a charitable trust based in a fine country house with an estate encompassing park and gardens, an arboretum, farms, forestry and a nature reserve. It is available for hire as a conference venue.

Conference Facilities

WEST DEAN IS A PERFECT VENUE FOR CONFERENCES, MEETINGS, TRAINING SESSIONS, LECTURES AND TEAM-BUILDING ACTIVITIES

The peace and tranquillity of the surroundings at West Dean, alongside the life of an arts college, creates a stimulating and relaxing environment for delegates. West Dean Conference Centre is housed in a fine flint country house, set in a 6,000-acre estate in the South Downs and surrounded by award-winning gardens featuring a restored walled kitchen garden with Victorian glasshouses.

The conference rooms at West Dean include three state rooms furnished with art and antiques, a grand oak reception hall with open fire and piano and, in the grounds, a newly converted Sussex Barn auditorium. There are several “break-out” rooms as well as a choice of well-equipped art and craft workshops and studios where tutored courses can be arranged for delegates.

The extensive grounds of the house and the West Dean estate can accommodate a host of activities and team-building exercises, including guided walks, clay pigeon-shooting and marquee hire.

Conference Room Facilities

West Dean's conference rooms include the complimentary use of a PA system, DVD or video player, TV, slide projectors, overhead projectors, flipcharts, stage erection and blackout. A small charge is made for data/LCD projectors and laptops. There is an IT suite on-site which can be used by delegates by prior arrangement. Water and sweets are included on tables.

Bar and Food

Conference delegates have the use of The Steward's Bar, located at the heart of the main building. Meals are served in the adjacent refectory and courtyard (weather permitting in summer). Meals are self-service with a daily changing menu. Most dietary requirements can be met with prior notice. At lunch and dinner there is a choice of two hot dishes including vegetarian, and an extensive salad bar, followed by a range of hot and cold desserts and fruit. Morning coffee and afternoon tea are served with biscuits and include a range of herbal teas.

In The Sussex Barn Auditorium, a cold finger buffet or sandwiches can be arranged for delegates.

Accommodation

There are 52 comfortably furnished bedrooms in the main country house. Many of the rooms feature antique furniture, private bathrooms and/or views over the surrounding gardens and estate. A further 10 bedrooms are located in The Vicarage, a short walk away from the main house, each with en-suite bathrooms. All rooms have tea and coffee-making facilities. Additional accommodation in the grounds can also be arranged at certain times.
