Why Girona?
The ancient walled city of Girona is only an hour north of Barcelona, yet it is a world apart. Its been fought over in almost every century since it was the Roman fortress of Gerunda on the Via Augusta, and perhaps more than any other place in Catalunya, it retains the distinct flavour of its erstwhile inhabitants.
Although the bulk of modern Girona lies on the west side of the River Onyar, most visitors spend nearly all their time in the old city , over the river. This thin wedge of land contains all the sights and monuments, and as it takes only half an hour or so to walk from end to end its easy to explore thoroughly.
Gironas chic bars and restaurants are grouped on c/de la Força in the centre of the old city, on and around the riverside Rambla Llibertat and on the parallel Plaça del Vi - the last two places being where youll also find the best daytime cafés with outdoor seating. Another little enclave of restaurants with good menús del dia is over the river in Plaça de la Independencia
